Pattern made with Ilustrator
Pattern made with Photoshop

Hello my friends! I'm still in the process of moving to a new apartment, but found time to keep answering some of your frequently asked questions from IG about my project #100PatternsByJessieamo. I will be answering two of them today!

Do I make my patterns in Photoshop or Illustrator?

What are my favorite tutorials to start learning how to make patterns?

I make patterns in both programs, it all depends on the look I want to achieve and the motifs I'm using. All of my motifs are handmade, but there's a big difference in how I handle them when they're watercolor illustrations or just sketches.

If I'm going to be tracing some sketches to create vectorized motifs I will definitely be using Illustrator. That also means that, most probably, I'll be adding colors digitally to those traced motifs. If you are a complete beginner and want to start making patterns using Illustrator—or just want to see how it's done out of curiosity—I recommend you this tutorial from Skillshare:

If you already know your way around Illustrator, you can start with this cool tutorial:

When I'm using some of my watercolor illustrations as motifs, the best way to go is to use Photoshop—keep in mind that you can make patterns with your doodles and vectorized motifs in PS too, I just prefer to do those in Illustrator. Also, there are ways of doing patterns with watercolor motifs in Illustrator as well but, in my experience, it's not the best option.

Even though the principle is the same, the steps to follow when making patterns in Illustrator VS Photoshop are very different. There aren't many tutorials for pattern making in PS, so I've had to learn from the one's that are available and come up with my own tricks and techniques that I might share in a tutorial of my own at some point. But for now, you can learn or see how to make a basic patterns in PS with this tutorial:

There are many other tutorials available on different platforms. Another great source is a Creativebug series called How to Design Fabric. It's a 5 part series that covers pattern design very broadly and with super cool teachers. If you're into well edited and filmed videos, you're going to like this one better, it's beautiful!!!

Finally, I have a gift for my readers. Shoot me an email through my contact form or writing to info@jessieamo.com, and I will send you a promo so you can enjoy 3 MONTHS of Skillshare classes for $0.99 only! Cool, huh?

I have to keep unpacking stuff now, hope this is helpful. I will keep answering some of your IG questions so, if you have one, don't be shy and ask me!

Have a lovely Sunday dear friends.

Love,

JessieAmo
